Profile

Dr. Partha Pratim Roy received his Masters in 2006 and PhD in 2010 from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain. His PhD work was on the multi-oriented text character analysis and their application on document image retrieval. Dr. Roy developed efficient algorithms towards automatic retrieval of Graphical Documents (map, music-documents, postal-documents, etc.) by analyzing text and graphical entities (such as seal). He is the recipient of "Best Student Paper" awarded by International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition(ICDAR), 2009, Spain.

Dr. Roy has been working extensively in Document Image Analysis, especially recognition of handwritten text of Indic scripts. Dr. Roy’s work on Indian language technology is a contribution of national importance. He has developed a novel cross-language platform to improve the recognition performance of low-resource Indic scripts by leveraging available datasets from other scripts. His work has made a powerful impact on the Indian document analysis research community.

Dr. Roy has made important theoretical contributions in Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis. He did his postdoctoral work in France and Canada towards understanding of historical document images. He was a member of many national and international projects including GOOGLE Digital Humanities Award. One of his papers was awarded as one of the "Top10%" papers at International Conference on Image Processing(ICIP), 2014, France. He qualified for Assistant Professor position in France in 2012.

To help hearing and speech impaired person, Dr. Roy has developed a robust Sign Language Recognition (SLR) system. Low-cost depth sensors such as Microsoft Kinect and Leap motion are utilized in combination to implement Indian SLR framework. He has also utilized sensor as a pen-paperless writing interface. He has proposed a system of human-computer applications where user can draw gestures and text in 3-D air for communication.

Dr. Roy is also carrying out research in cognitive engineering with the help of EEG signals. He has proposed novel authentication system for mobile device users using EEG signals. His work on neuromarketing improves user experience by automatic feedback system.

Dr. Roy has gathered industrial experience while working in TCS and Samsung. In Samsung, he was a part-leader of Computer Vision group. Dr. Roy and his team developed several prototypes for smart-phone users. His work on automatic text transcription from scene-image was highly acclaimed.

Presently, Dr. Roy is working as Associate Professor at Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. His main research area is Pattern Recognition. He has published more than 210 research papers in various international journals, conference proceedings. He has co-organized several international conferences and workshops, has been member of the Program Committee of a number of international conferences, and acts as reviewer for many journals in the field.
